1. There an no official positions between the secretary and
Deputy Secretary and the Assistant 3ecrotaries at the present ties.
Defense has proposed a bill which would create an Under Secretary for
International Security .Affairs (i.e. an elevation of Gordon Gray's
present Position). It is not believed that this proposal will get
anywhere during this session, however.

2. There are nine Assistant ~3ecretaries of Defense as follova:
(1) t trofler, (a) Mn#mW and Parooanel, (3) Legislative and Public
Affairs, (k) National. Security Affairs, (5) :Research and Development
(6) Applications Ingireserixsg. (7) &u ply and Logistics, (8) Properties
and Installations, and (9) Health and Medical. Then is, in addition,,
the General Counsel olio boa the saw rank, status and salary. In the
Howse Executive Pay Bill, these positions will be raised to $19,000, in
the Senate bill, to 420,000.
3. eh'of the Service Departments has a . nary and Under
Secretary. Below that level, each of the Service Departments has roan'
Assistant Secretaries. A bill has just passed the Naase which will add
a now Assistant Secretary for Fasesareh and Development to each of the
Service Departments. Under both the House and Senate Executive Pay Bifla
the salaries of the :Secretaries are raised to x'2,000, and the Under
3scretaries to $0,000. ilgder the Serrate bill, the Assistant iecreteries
are raised to $W,000, under the Home bill, to $19,000.
