STATEMENT REGARDING DAMAGE TO HOUSEHOLD E FF.CT>
My household effects were packed in a careless and negligent fashion.
Boxes of relatively delicate kitch ne equipment were packed with no excelsior
or shredded paper to protect the contents; items within were protected from
each other by no more than a single sheet of paper. Items were packed loosely,
crashed into and crushed one another. A "Mesco" roaster and a "Sunbeam"
waffle iron were packed on top of smaller kitchen items, with nothing but a
single sheet of paper separating the roaster and the iron. Both were ruined.
No apparent system was used in_the -- large items were packed on the ~
bottom or on the top and smaller items were thrown in the crevices. There was
no regard for weight, value or fragility. Items which alrady were in cases
or boxes, such as a portable sewing machine and plastic playing cards, were
simply put into a crate with many other loose items. As a result, the loose
parts of the sewing machine flew around freely and completely ruined the sewing
machine case and broke parts of the machine itself. The playing' card case top
came off, probably almost immediately, and the cards ultimately were distributed
throughout the crate and many were broken.
Other e L1,r*_ L_DDcx- pas i",tee highly e'4deat, An unprotected alarm
clock was packed adjacent to six unprotected plastic ice box dishes. All. seven
items were broken. Chest of drawers were packed so that the drawers could swirl:;
in and out for about k inches, resulting in several broken drawers, severe
scratches on the fronts of the drawers, and the chests were shaken out of line.
Nails were pounded indiscriminately through the tog,_atlt . side of the boxes
often puncturing, denting, or r plTng the contents. Severe dents and actual
holes were thus made in the "Sunbeam" electric coffee maker, a hand-hammered
pitcher, and several other items.
There were no holes in the packing cases, more -,-ere there any broken slats
in the cases. All the damage occurred within the boxes and is a direct result
of t
of poor ack s o the e can never be repaired proper y. Those s which can be repaired will never again have their previous appearance or
value. Some item: which could be repaired in the States cannot e repaire': here
and -ire a direct loss for two or more years.
The damage herein described has been witnessed by an authorized representat,i...y
of this station and the accuracy of the above statements is attested to by the
Bureau Chief. The estimate of damage in dollars has been made in accordance w 'V,;
the original cost of the item, its depreciation, replacement value and Post of
repair. The attached estimate is conservative.
