1. This memorandum is for information only.
2. First reference to NASSER in the NEW YO~tK TIMES was on 3 January
1953, jpage 4) their Librarian informs me.~ There were other references
n
to Lt. Col. NASSER in the TIMES of 1953 particularly in May and June when
he became vice president of the Revolutionary Council. The 3 January 1953
reference said "A.F. e1-Tawil hails recent threat by Lt. Col. Nasser of
guerilla warfare in the Suez Canal Zone if British forces fail to evacuate
it completely."
3. The first known reference to NASSER in the press of the UNITED
STATES is said to have been "early in November 1952" two months after the
NAGUIB coup when the HERALD-TRIBUNE is said to have carried an interview
with NASSER. Sam checking this and trying to get copy of the article.
Marguerite Higgins is said to have written a profile on NASSER which the
I~RALD TRIBUNE ran "around January 1953?"
~+. The first reference to NASSER in the British press was in the
LONDON TIMES on 30 December 1952. The LONDON TIMES on 30 December 1952
quoted from an article by NASSER 6ri "British forces in the Canal Zone."
5. The earliest mention in the FRENCH press seems to be in September,
1954 when "FRANCE ILLUSTRATED" published a profile by R. Branellec entitled
"GAMAL ABDEL NASSER, HOMME DO FER DUNE EGYP'I.'E NOUVELE, a les eux fixes sur
1'AFRIQUE DU NORD."
6. American magazines Pirst took notice of NASSER in March 1954, as
follows
5 March 1954: "United States News and World Report", "Profile of the Week".
8 March 1954: "Life", "Front and Center for Egypt's Real Boss", by J. Bell.
