July was a routine month in the Geographic Research Area, although C 3 c and map reference activities ct ntinuc to mate at near-capacity levels. Three n U/W studies, done according to the "feasibility" format, are a1mo t ready for reproduction. Major attention continued to be given to priority photographic studies, IGY.Antarctica, and the coordination of city interests in foreign aerial photography axd mapping su:?veys . 2. The Carto&`apby Division completed. 55 reps and charts, all for M. Requests for the month numbered 65, 59 for CIA and 6 for the Department- of State. The Special Support Branch completes. 16 maps and. Charts and accepted requests for 21; in addition, 5 revisions a 2 reruns were requested and completed. 3. The Map TAbrary Division received. 4,706 maps and. 981 related publications from foreign sources. Of these, 31% were retained in CIA, 30% sent to AMS, 20 ? to the Library of Congress) 13% to rA, and the remaining 6% divided among the other IAMPCC agencies. The Chief/G returned to duty following five months' attendance at the Armed Forces Staff college, Norfolk. 7. The Office of the Chief/G presented a paper on ""Geographic Intelligence in Wartime" and one on "Geographic Central Support Services in Wartime" at the DD/2's 1957 Operation Alert a rciso. The secretary to Chief/G s%M-vised the stenographic team selected for the exercise. 8. The Chief, Map Library Division, participated in a variety of conferences related to coordination of commmity Interests in foreign aerial survey and mapping projects. 9. The new D/GG-D/GC map, Railroads in Latin America, was delivered in 425 copies to the InternationComrereaaceMrn, -went of State, for use at the Pan American Railway Congress being held in linos Aires at the ed of August. 10. Ended discussions were initiated with the Soviet Flapping Intelligence Staff, D/GG, by two groups of scientists (Applied. Physics Laboratory, Johns Hopkins 'diversity, for the U.S. Navyy Bureau of Ordnance, and, another group from the Office of Naval Research) who are undertaking a study at the request of the Chief of Naval Operations. The purpose of the study is to evaluate (1) available geodetic and cartographic data on the Soviet Union, and (2) prospects for field collection of data for which, no map coverage or geodetic data are avail- able. A paper sizing the discussions is in preparation for Agency policy levels, to inform them of the eventual demands that might be placed on, the Agency. 11. A meeting on the NIS was scheduled between the GeognThy Division and the Special Studies Section, ACIC, just prior to the Section's transfer to St. Louis. It is anticipated that mazy problems will arise in effecting Chapter IX coordination with ACIC in St. Lenuis, particularly since there is to be no direct tie line.
