SUBJECT: Research Aid
COMMENT :
As a research aid for economists, paper I has one main
weakness: that of emphasis. It gives about equal attention
to all the work of D/GG, although some of this work (e.g.,
evasion geography, safe areas, covert travel, geodesy, gra-
vimetry, Antarctica, etc.) will be of little interest to
economists. Especially since they are not allowed to see much
of it. On the other hand, some phases of D/GG work that could
be of considerable value to economists do not receive appropriate
emphasis (e.g., our know-how and know-where regarding: civil
divisions, economic, and demographic maps and data; our basic
interest in locating practically everything the economists want
to locate; the common interests we share with the economists re-
garding land use, economic effects of political boundaries,
location and dispersal of industry, movement patterns, etc.).
Also, the discussion of the division's self-initiated work does
not give representative or economist-oriented picture, even though
this work contains much material of potential interest to economists.
Divide into two parts. Part I to be a once over lightly for
the whole division and its work (somewhat on the order of your
paper, but a little more detailed. Part II to single out and hit
hard those aspects of the division's interests, capabilities, in-
telligence holdings, support work, and written products that would
be of particular interests to economists. Part II should include,
inter alia, a check list of subjects on which our interests overlap
somewhat with those of the ERA, and 2 or 3 examples of instances in
which D/GG has made significant contributions to the solution of
ERA research problems. In the treatment of our self-initiated work,

it would be desirable to list the titles (with very brief
comments after some) of about 20 studies and articles prepared
during the last 2 years that offer substantial data in which
economists might be interested.
If you and concur in the above recommendation we
will supply you with a check list and titles of our publications.
