Production and services in the Geographic Area remained Ev; generally normal level during the month, but included a larger-thea-ueun_ proportion of high-priority, =eh projects. The program of briefings lyzi area specialists in the Geography Division, which was initiated last Month, continued with the presentation of two briefings during Nov eMber "Soviet Penetration in the Middle East", and "Selection of Guided MissiL.: Launching Sites in the USSR". 2. The Cartography Division completed 54 maps and Charts, of whia 1 was for State/NIS, 1 for USAF, and 52 for the Agency. Revects accept;;., numbered 123 -- 114 for CIA, 6 for the Department of State, and 3 for ttc. Air Force. The Special Support Branch completed 18 new maps and charts and 1 revision during the month and accepted requests for 28 new maps azy, charts and 1 revision; in addition, 4 re-runs were reqnested and complTt 3. The Map Library Division received 5,468 maps and 1,004 reLateti pdblications from foreign sources. Of these, 35% were ::etained in CIA, 39% sent to Army Map Service, and 20% to the Library of Congress. A total of 18,240 map aheets were disseminated in answer to 1199 requesto, 4. The Soviet Mapping Intelligence Staff of the Geogeaehy discussed the Soviet-US exchange of scientists to Arctic IGY etatione with various agencies during the month.25X1A9a 25X1A of the Photo Intelligence Divtec? z vhere they participated in a series of briefings,. chaired the regular meeting of the jCS Working .4 25X1A9a on Ground Intelligence Photography. 12e The Chief of the Coordination Staff, Gebgraehy Division, attended a conference called for consideration of an outline vide and schedule for the Chapter I Annuals. The magnitude of such a program and the adaitianal workload were discussed at length. Since no agreement was reached_ by group, it was decided that the proposed outline andeachedule wpn74 1549 referred by members to their respective agencies for comment. Chief, Current Support Staff, briefed Chief/G and Geography Division representa- tives on the workings of his office and relationships between GRA and CBS. 14. /n addition to the two briefings reported in the preceding paragraph, Geography Division participated in the following briefings and debriefings of particular interest during the month: (a) The Far East Branch briefed DAD/RR in for his Far East; 25X1 A5a 1 (b) The TBSR Branch discussed with his tour Of Soviet geographic centers; (c) attendeo 25X1A9a the debriefi o 25X1 A5a 1 2 who toured the Soviet Union in June and July 1957; and d Ambassador Daniels, Special Assistant on Antarctica, Department of State, was briefed, by GOA on Soviet activities, intentions and plans in.
