UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT TO Director of Training FROM : Chief/Language and Area School/TR suBJECT: Weekly Activities Report #43 DATE: 30 October 1958 Document No. ' NO CHANGE in Class [] DECLASSIFT`;D Class. At request of FE, we are making arrangements for oral pro- ficiency testing of five persons in Thai at the FSI, as the Agency does not possess anyone qualified to sit on a testing panel. 2. At the request of discussed with him the FE request for two language-trained Japanese) JOT's a year. 3. has called to explore opportunity for a staff position in LAS. While he has demonstrated competence in teaching Thai,-me cannot afford him for this alone. Moreover, he does not meet our standards for staff employment in the language field. He can be considered for assignment to one of our scarce slots only on a basis of (a) his competence to develop and conduct area training on South and Southeast Asia, and (b) probability of requirements adequate to justify employment of an area specialist. Assuming the latter, I feel we could seriously consider him--more on a basis of potential than of meeting our standards for the few area specialists we can afford. 4. We have given 0 comments on his memorandum on the lan- guage problem, and have suggested that he might send it to the DCI after your presentation rather than sooner, as he had planned. This suggestion was agreeable to him. 25X1 25X1 25X1 Approved For Release 2004/05/01 ` ~I 9 A000300030001-0 57ANDARD FORM No. pproved For Rele a 200,4195105 GIA- QP.6Q. .0594AOO D030001-0 Office Memorandum ? UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT TO Acting Chief, Language and Area School DATE: 29 October 1958 FROM Deputy Chief, Area Training suBJECT: Weekly Activities Report A. SIGNIFICANT ITEMS None to report. B. OTHER ACTIVITIES 1. Our discussion with DDTR of how best to overcome misinformation and indifference concerning our Americans Abroad Orientations among DDP TO's resulted in a decision that should make a 2X1 bid through C/PP to brief this group on the program. Optimum TT% time would seem to be after publication of the November Bul- letin, which will carry a strong bid for enrollment of depend- ents in the "Saturday Special" scheduled for 1? January. 2. The first briefing on Latin America, which we have improvised hastily to meet an urgent WH requirement, has an enrollment of 11 including 6 dependents. Three of the total are COMM4O. has discussed the project with about 12 WH desk and staff officers, who without exception have given encouragement and useful advice. Five of middle and senior rank have committed themselves to handle the 90-minute briefings on individual nations and posts, which will follow the general portions of the program for the group as a whole. 3. All three main features of a recent class day in Italy__-BC,S `1 proved to be bull's eyes. M1. Luigi Racca of USIA, who prac- ticed law in Italy for 25 years, discussed key institutions - church, law, and education. We felt he was one of the most effective teachers we have ever had the pleasure of observing in our "I" Building classroom. Miss White, also of USIA, evaluated communications media with exceptional discernment and skill in communicating her own thoughts. The Italian made film "The Bicycle Thief" was viewed aft r re ar hours by most of the class on a volunteer basis. who saw it with 25X1 us, agreed that it contains a mine of practical data on Italian attitudes and behavior.
