Declassified and Approved For Release 2013/08/19: CIA-RDP61-00357R000100310009-8 Journal Office of Legislative Counsel Tuesday - 12 June 1956 Was informed separately by Mr. Smart, Chief Clerk of the House Armed Services Committee, and Mr. Darden, of the Senate Committee, that there is very little chance that the CIA legislation would be considered by those Committees during this session. According to Mr. Smart, Chairman Vinson had Primary problems and would be away a good deal of the time between now and adjourn- ment. In addition, the Committee had a substantial backlog of "higher priority" legislative proposals which it had to deal with. I inquired of Mr. Darden whether the Senate Committee would be willing to take this legislation up first and he indicated that he saw very little chance of this happening due to the fact that the mem- bers of the CIA Subcommittee were probably the busiest members of the entire Senate. He, too, pointed out that the Committee had an enormous backlog of legislation. I have informed both Mr. Dulles and Col. White of this development.
