MEMORANDUM FOR: Director of Central Intelligence
SUBJECT: Visit of Edwin Weisl and Cyrus Vance -
16 January 1959
1. This memorandum is for information only.
2. Subsequent to your telephone conversation with Mr. Weisl
this noon, I talked further with Cyrus Vance to gain any possible leads
as to any specifics and any preparations we might need to make. '
Mr. Vance indicated that from their standpoint the figures presented
last year were still fresh enough in their minds that we need only
deal with the difference between the figures as then presented and
the current figures. Since this was by telephone I presume that by
figures he was referring to missiles, probably long-range bomber
forces and even possibly submarines. In addition, Mr. Vance indicated
they would be interested in some discussion on China. This information
was made available to Mr. Sheldon.
3. Mr. Vance stated that Mr. Weisl and he were still associated
with the staff of the Preparedness Investigating Subcommittee and were
also associated with the staff of the Space Committee, both of which
are under the chairmanship of Senator Lyndon Johnson. TOP SECRET
clearances on both individuals are still current.
