1. During the latter half of 1957 the Geographic Attache program
was not only maintained at a level of six positions, but a seventh was
added. This represents an all-time high for the number of Geographic
Attache positions. These men are responsible for the conduct of the
map procurement and cartographic and geographic reporting program.
Further, in a period when the Foreign Service was drastically reducing
new recruitments, an all-out effort succeeded in obtaining the arnn;_nt
25X1C4a his guarantees, for the mapping organizations and the intelligence
community, a continued flow of full map procurement and cartographic
reporting by qualified men. 25X1 C4a
2. In the latter half of 1957 initial steps were taken to insure
the, inclusion of an eighth Geographic Attache position in the proposed
Bureau of African Affairs in the Department of State. If successful in
the next half year, this move would increase the total number of
positions to eight, and would provide concentration on Africa, an area
which is becoming of increased importance to the intelligence community.
3. Significantsteps were made in the planned program for full
cataloging of the map collection. To date all is in accordance with
the schedule and it is expected that the goal of complete cataloging
will be achieved by next September. The achieving of this goal will
increase the efficiency in the Reference servicing of map holdings to
intelligence requesters.
4. Concentrated efforts have been made to make all segments of the
Agency aware of the facilities available in the Map Library. Eight Map
Bulletin Boards have been established in different Agency buildings,
numerous tours have been conducted for the various components and new
members entering on duty in the agency, and many briefings have been
given. This concentration, capping an expanded procurement program,
guarantees full availability of existing intelligence maps to the
community.
