.
the Geographic Research Area during October. Among them were a number /- v
of special studies prepared for higher planning staffs of the Agency.
Major work in hand continues to be cancerned with the programed support
of DD/P and (ST and the development of intelligence on LBSR cities and
Soviet geodesy.
2. The Cartography Diviaiob completed 147 amps and charts -- 1,41
for the Agency and 6 for the Department of State. Requests were accepted
for 147 maps and charts -- 139 for the Agency and 8 for the Department of
state.

22% to the. l ibra 7 at Congress. The DivUion sent out 27,953 maps in
response to 1,304 requests; In addition, 205 geographic and cartographic
items were distributed in response to 1-3.8 requests.

6. Acting Chief/0 and SA to Cb/D - In a any with others from
the DD/I -- spent several days visiting ACIC, St. Louis, and SAC head-
quarters, Omaha. Both briefings were excellent and contributed measurably
toward a better understanding of the target work being ace shed in
USAF. Arrangementa were mcwde for the direct participation or D/GG in the
revision of SAC E and E requirements.
7. USSR Branch, Geography Division,
participa n scuas ono with Washington Office of the Arctic
Institute regarding Intelligence interest in the Institute?s Arctic.
Bibliography Project. A subsequent meeting of interested cauponents
within CIA will be held under OCR sponsorship to determine Agency willing-
ness to support the project financially.
8. A series of conferences were held by the Cartography Division
during the month with the objective of preparing a revised set of standard
specifications for the NIS base maps produced by the Division. These
specifications, 'i he n agreed upon, wi3l provide new opportunity for pro-
duction econoury and streamlining.
9. The Geographic Research Arses briefing for October, "Race 25X1 A9a
Relations in Africa South of the Sahara", was presented by
of the Geography Division, who recently returned from an area-familiarization
trip in the area.
10. In response to questions raised by State regarding CIA/BR-G--20,,
25X1A9a of GG/X met with Mr. Pringle, Dent of State, regarding
the Ecuador-Peru boundary. It appears that the Department's desire to
reserve its position on this bounds- ,r dispute may be based, in paart, on
an erroneous valuation of the available topographic information. A request
has been submitted to PIC for review of pertinent aerial photography.
U. Proposals of the Chapter IX Subcommittee that schedules be
relaxed -- which were forwa?x ed to AI)/BI an 2 September -- have not yet
been presented to the 1tS Ca, ittee. The AD/BI is exploring the possibility
of reducing total time required for production of various sections --
through cuts in content -- so that ocamitments can remain as they are.
25X1A9a
12. of the Geography Division attended a
week-long DSAI' colloquium on gravity at a invitation of AFM 3C2X:
25X1 A9a also attended a dinner for Dr. M. M. Somov, head of the Soviet
Antarctic Operations, and cbtaixnea eA itional information on Soviet plans
and results in the Antarctic area.
