8 May. We discussed with them the revised outline and the
suggestions that had emanated from the Monday night meeting.
was especially helpful. (He delicately hinted that
he detected an FT tint in the newer outline, I told him
that couldn't possibly be due to our long association with
that activity. The FI tint to which he referred was our
inclusion of an appendix for cold war reporting which we
feel may have immediate usefulness.)
We do not plan any other meetings with Clandestine
Services personnel until we have a first draft for their com-
ments. We will, of course, continue our practice of discus-
sing any specific questions which may arise with the indivi-
duals we consider most knowledgable.
is continuing his review of materials prior
to starting the actual writing. On Monday, 11 May, he
visited AEC; on Tuesday, 12 May, he visited the Office of
Civil and Defense Mobilization (Bob appeared somewhat
shocked at the confusion there as well as the dearth of
materials. However, he is requesting several films which
might have training value for use overseas); on Wednesday,
13 May, he, are attending a lecture on
the psychological aspects of nuclear warfare, given at
Fort McNair. Thursday Bob and Nick will go to the Pentagon
for discussions. This will complete the survey for materials
and devices and writing will begin probably this week, start-
ing with the portion devoted to survival.
The trip to was most successful.
took the men sightseeing Monday morning; 25X1A9a
took over that afternoon, completing the tour of the base.
Monday night after the meeting in 11315" "Jib" entertained
them at Archie's bar (I went to bed). (Incidental intel-
ligence: Jib gives his empty Drambouie bottles to Benny
who uses them for field explosives.) Tuesday morning Benny
gave them a field demonstration which was, I believe, the
high point of the trip as far as the men were concerned!
One other item of interest was enthusiasm about
his OFC training. He said he had been in the Agency seven
years -- two in ORR and five in OSI. He said he felt sure
that if he had had the benefit of this training five years
ago, he could have done a far better job in OSI.
