nAA, Ir_-11-1 CAM AL - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2009/12/18: CIA-RDP61-00442A000200040062-7 Office Memorandum UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT TO Acting Chief, Language and Area School FROM : Acting Deputy for Language Training suBJEcT: Weekly Activities Report DATE: 2 September 1959 A. SIGNIF CAN] ITEM None to report. B. OTHER ACTIVITIES 1. We have decided to have run the full-time PersianCne course in spite of the fact that there 11 be only one student. reason for this decision is that will still be aboard anyway, since we do not feel we should let go on the basis of what may be only a temporary slump in demand, and will have enough time both to run the course for one student and continue his work on the revision of his text. Another reason is that it is impossible to find suitable external training for the one candidate without a delay which would be detrimental to his assignment schedule. has informed hat it will not be possible 2 for to work with LAS after his re urn from his long TDY in Europe. They wan o use him on the desk, and he will almost certainly be required by other desks for other TDY assignments. This means that we will have to cancel the full-time Korean reading course which FDD had expected us to give for two of their people, and will have to try to arrange external training for them. 3. We ve found a Chinese man named_who looks good as a replacemen We are having him come down from New York for an interview, and if his accent and other qualifications seem satis- factory we will begin the hiring process. 4. s reported for duty again after his year of doctoral work at the University of Minnesota. His course work for the PhD is now done, and his dissertation is nearing completion. 5. will be on leave until 14 September. 6. We were asked to recommend a French tutor for the daughter of Mr. Fitzgerald (Chief, FE). We recommended one of our own contract instructors, who was willing to do this work on her own time, and we understand that she and Miss Fitzgerald have come to a satisfactory arrangement* tent__ RE-RI Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2009/12/18: CIA-RDP61-00442A000200040062-7 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2009/12/18 :CIA-RDP61-00442A000200040062-7 IJVII I flJ I ? ^ .. -- 7.
