UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT TO Chief, Language and Area School FROM : Deputy for Language Training suBJECT: Weekly Activities Report A. SIGNIFICANT ITEMS None to report. B. OTHER ACTIVITIES DATE: 29 July 1959 1. ~ was glad to have an opportunity, at the recent Inter- Axencv Round Table meeting in New Haven which he attended with to observe at first hand the instruction in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean conducted at Yale's Institute of Far Eastern Languages. Although we have had very favorable critiques from Agency students attending IFEL in the past, it is pleasant to be able to confirm that the methods there are sound and that the results seem good. The only disadvantage for our people in the courses there is the somewhat overemphasized concentration on comprehension skills as opposed to speaking skills, but even this disadvantage is lessened in the later stages of any course by IFEL'B willingness to provide very flexible training to suit the needs of individual students who wish to pursue a different path from that required by the Air Force's objectives. le at IFEL, ~ obtained a lead on a possible replacement for in the person of one of the instructors who the director feels might be happier elsewhere. Although the "personality difficulties" cited by the Director as reasons might tend to make us wary, we are having such difficulty finding a suitable Chinese instructor that we feel every prospect should be investigated. We are submitting his name for contact permission. 3. Hungarian Reading Workshop, which ran for 15 weeks, has now been terminated. Seven students began the course, with one dropping out due to overseas assignment. Four of the students have announced their intention of enrolling in the East European Workshop in the fall, which will include Hungarian. Li. Two students are being given tutorial instruction in Russian at the Intermediate level. One is from SR, the other from the Africa division. 5. ~ returned on Monday from a pleasant and profitable two weeks at the University of Chicago Management Course.
