SIGNIFICANT ITEMS None to report. B. OTHER ACTIVITIES 1. The third year of the Voluntary Language Training Program began with the seventh trimester on 4 May 1959. This is also the last time that the Voluntary Program will be run on a trimester basis. Beginning in September of this year the voluntary classes will be on a schedule of two 21-week semesters a year. Because of the revision in the VIP schedule the current trimester is also the smallest in number of classes and enrollment of any trimester since the program was started. The final enrollment for the Summer Tri- mester of 1959 is 115 students in 20 classes studying twelve lan- guages - Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Japanese, Polish, Russian, Spanish, Swahili and Swedish. Two of these classes are 3-hour weekly seminars in French and German for students who have reached the intermediate level. DATE: 7 May 1959 The large drop in enrollment is of course a result of the cancellation of 101 classes in all but the more unusual languages and the fact that no 102 classes are being given, since all 101 classes conducted during the current trimester are in Chinese (with 10 students), Dutch, Greek, Japanese and Swedish. 2. The French Intermediate (Full-Time class of-1 spent the week of 27 April through 1 May at Besides the Romance Language Staff other members of OTIR helped greatly in the exercises, namel 3. After a slow start the Spanish, Italian, and Romance seminars are meeting with great success. The average attendance is 5 to 7 students. 25 YEAR RE-REVIE Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2009/12/18: CIA-RDP61-00442A000200040122-0 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2009/12/18: CIA-RDP61-00442A000200040122-0 4+. ~~ represented the Agency at examinations given by Mr. Edmund Glenn, Interpreting Branch, Ian a rvices Div.$ Department of State on 29 Aril was approved as ordinary interpreter and as language escort.
