OTHER ACTIVITIES 1. The distribution of languages for which students regis- tered in the Winter Trimester of the Voluntary Language Training Program, beginning on 7 January 1959 is as follows: 1. French - 116 2. German - 102 3. Russian - 47 4. Spanish - 38 5. Italian - 18 6. Chinese - 16 7. Japanese - 12 8. Arabic - 10 This usual attrition caused by early drop-outs yields the following figures as of 11 February: 1. French - 104 2. German - 85 3. Russian - 38 4. Spanish - 35 5. Italian - 16 6. Chinese - 16 7. Japanese - 12 8. Arabic - 10 2. The French Basic (Full-Time) class spent the last week of the course at and took the Agency Proficiency Test in French on Friday. The results were excellent. In the oral examination seven out of ten students obtained a grade of Inter- mediate or above; three students qualified as Elementaries. Of the low aptitude group (score of six or seven in Language Aptitude Exam) three qualified as Intermediates. Eight of the ten students are scheduled to continue in the Intermediate (Full-Time) class due to start on 2 March. The Russian Basic Reading RSW I (Part-Time) course, taught by ends this week. There are at present two sections, with a total of ten students. 5. A list of available non-classified foreign languagefilms has been received from in the Film Branch. is preparing a program of noontime showings, for announcement in March Bulletin. 6.
