Post-Mortem on NIE 72. 1-57:
The Outlook for the Sudan,
dated 6 August 1957
I. Finding
Preparation of this estimate was handicapped b,y the dearth of
detailed up-to-date information on political and social conditions
in the Sudan. Specifically, adequate information was lacking on
the strength and political role of the religious brotherhoods, the
organization, support and objectives of the major political parties,
the strength of the Communists, and the extent and nature of
Egyptian influence in the Sudan. In addition, very little basic in-
formation was available on the southern part of the country. These
deficiencies in intelligence coverage appear due mainly to the fact
that official US representation in the Sudan was minimal before the
country became independent in 1956.
II. Action
The members of the IAC are requested to take such action as
they deem appropriate to deal with these problems.
