Post-Mortem on NIE 91-58:
The Outlook for Argentina,
dated 5 August 1958
No major intelligence deficiencies were noted during the prepara-
tion of NIE 91-58. Nevertheless, the brief tenure of the Frondizi
regime at the time of the NIE's production made it difficult to discern
trends on which to base estimates of future development. The chief
estimative problems involved:
1. The status of the military: we lacked precise information
on the importance of those elements in the armed forces
who are most opposed to Frondizi, and the depth of
inter-service rivalry.
2. The extent to which the regime can improve the economic
situation without considerable outside financial aid.
3. The capability of strong nationalist elements to hamper
the administration's efforts to secure foreign capital.
