Conditions and Trends in French Tropical Africa,
dated 17 June 1958
In general, sufficient information was available for the prepara-
tion of NI,E 75-58 on major trends in French Tropical Africa. How-
ever, in view of the rapid changes taking place throughout this area,
more comprehensive inforrnator will be required. As to French
Equatorial Africa, major gaps exist in our material. In particular,
more information is required concerning Equatorial leaders and
political parties and their relations with parties and personalities
in French West Africa. More material is also needed concerning
the strengths and weaknesses of conservative and radical elements
and their leaders in French West Africa. Additional information is
required on the contacts between Cairo and-the UPC in Cameroun.
For French Tropical Africa 4q a whole, information is needed
concerning: (a) Communist i,nfltpgnce, (b) the activities of labor
unions, (c) student groups and their connections with Communist
organizations, (d) political alignments in outlying areas (e. g. ,
