Projects Completed. (1) The fifth part of "Progress and Problems of the European Satellite Economies in 1956" (10.1509), dealing with developments in light industry in 1956 and prospects for 1957, was completed by ; work 25X1A9a by these two analysts on the final part of this project, the calculation of production indexes for light industry, is al- most finished. (2) I/CI's contribution to NIS 18, Czechoslovakia, Section 64' Manufacturing and Construction (30.1516) was completed by 25X1A9a wrote the parts on production, foreign trade, and organization of light industry, and wrote the parts on man- 25X1A9a power and investment in light industry. (3) IICI's contribution to "Communist China's Imports and Exports, 1956" (40.1525) was completed by (4) Cotton Yarn production estimates for 1956 were reviewed for the "Economic Intelligence Briefing Handbook" (00.1769). b. Status of Other Projects (1) continued work on two projects, 25X1A9a "Soviet Ruble-Dollar Ratios for Consumer Goods" (10.1626) and "Price Trends in Consumer Expenditures in the USSR" (30.153+). (2) - continued work on "Expenditures on 25X1A9a Consumer Services in the USSR" (30.1771); he spent a good part of his time during the month in making comments (in conjunction with D/A) on memoranda on Soviet national income accounts as they affect the consumption sector of the USSR economy. 25X1A9a Approved For Release 2000/08/26 : C) (1 ~ 00137A000100020073-8 Approved For Release 2(0/08/26 : CIAU FE T GI37A00010002Q073-8 (3) continued work on synthetic fibers and fabrics in the USSR. 25X1A9a (4) drafted a proposed Current Support Memorandum, "Hungarian Government Risks Widespread Discontent by Restricting Consumption." 25X1A9a (5) continued to gather information for "The Housing Problem in the European Satellites" (38.1741), visiting State Department analysts and the FHA library. 25X1A9a (6) spent three days on the light industry section of the old Rumanian NIS, Section 64 (30.814), at the request of the NIS coordinator, Merton Jeffers. (7) is almost finished with "Domestic Trade in Communist Tina" 3 ,1648), but is also spending much of his time on hangover work on Section 64 of the North Korean NIS 41A (10.1053), for which he has been D/I coordinator. (8) continued work on "Industrial Capital Investment in Light Industry in Communist China" (30-1535)- 2.
