SUBJECT Attendance at the Proceedings of the American Economic
Association
This is to =prelim my appreciation for the opportunity of
ttending the Proceedings of the American Economic Association 'ring
December. The following points of information are perhaps
rthy of your attention.
The peers on the Soviet economy were interestinc, but not
particularly surprising in content or meaning, and were insufficiently
oriented towards interpretation of the latest developments in the
relevant areas of investigation. The opportunity of bearing the papers
delivered is a less important aspect of attendance, for they may be
permed later upon publication of the Proceedings and attendance V- too
large to permit frequent questionings of the speakers and discussants
either during or atter the session. Nonetheless, it was a pleasure to
witness the very commendable performance of of 25X1A9a
Analysis Division in his discussion and critique of a paper concernin6
developments in the economy of Cemmunist China. I was most happily

echolarly oommand of the eeonomic problems examined, a comblootion rarely
found in the writings of competent economists.

mentioned to me that in his next contact with he would

miertion the passib of having some unclassified econonic research
reports delivered by the appropriate ERA analysts to his seminar
students of the Soviet economy. It is my belief that this kind of
contact' cc 'e the persouel and professional approach, could be
inweaulbie as a means of strengthening the respect which many pro-
in the academic community holdibr the professionals and
reeeereb product of BHA. By this means the recruiting of promising
and qualified graduate economists probably could be made much easier.
/n a roundtable discussion of the market for economists I was

tives speak to the discussants concerning the
Agency desires and its needs in securing additional
economic research. over, the arrangement of the
ble may have been infbrmal so that there was no
representative vould be called upon.
Finally, would like to indicate my pleasure at the opportunity
homing (aloag with NIIIIIIIMIMMIEMEN1111=111.1dEllir at
agraduates of Columbia Ubiversity) a discussion of severe
