II August 1954 MEMORANDUM FOR THE RECORD SUBJECT; American Universities Field Forces (AUFS) 1. On 9 August 1954, of OO/C and I discussed the number of copies of the AUFS field letters that would be required by the Agency and State. They felt rather strongly that CIA's subscription should cover the requirements of both the Agency and State. I reiterated the necessity of being fair to AU "S which means, to my way of thinking, that each Government agency that desires the service should subscribe just as each university subscribes. 2. On 10 August, - catted to say that he had in- quired of Stanley Smieget, LAD/State, who said that the De- partment of State would need only six copies of the AUFS letters. I conveyed this information to Howard Penniman who said that this simply wasn't true. He said that Smieget did not know the requirements nor could he find out the re- quirements of State. Penniman said that he would determine the requirements.
