I-I'^ ?^"" S0075OA000200090112-5 25X1A 25X1A9a 25X1A 25X1A9a PS ONLY 6 January 1958 MORANDUM FOR: Special Assistant to the Director for Planning Honor Awards with Particular Reference to HTAUTOMAT 1. You recall I discussed with you Dr. Guthe's suggestion that I take the initiative in obtaining an honor award for Art Lundahl. I have discussed this matter with and the Secretary of the Honor Awards Board, OWN,,= 2. After taking into account what seemed to me to be bona fide administrative problems'which Art would face if he received an homer award in the face of the extraordinary labors of his people, I come up with two propositions: a. That Mr. Duties send the unit a letter of recognition along the lines of the draft attached as Tab A. and b. That, as has suggested. I appear before the Honor Awards Board and orally present the reasons why this office recommends an award for Art. 3. For your information, there is attached as Tab B the pertinent Regulation. No. R. ZO 635. I have noted with red the intelligence awards that may be appropriate as well as the provision on page 3 for the letter of recognition. 4. In our discussion of this matter, yax were interested also in the relevance of this matter of honor awards to the personnel in AQUATONE. Though I am by no means competent to suggest all who might be considered for such awards. I do believe that honor awards would be in order at this time particularly for (within the group of my acquaintance) It may well be that Jim Cunningham should be included in this list. If it should be argued that such awards should be delayed pending the conclusion of their activities, I would like to offer the suggestion that if they are deserved to date they ought to be given. Certainly we cannot overlook the stimulus which would come from the receipt of these awards and the lift which the recipients would get for their continuing activities. 6. I'm also forwarding to you the thank you notes which Art had received and which you had expressed an interest in seeing (Tab C). JAMES Q.
