In connection with the Middle East crisis, it is extremely important that we determine the extent of Soviet or Soviet-manned submarines opera- ting in the MMediterranean. There are believed to be at least two and perhaps four or more Soviet submarines now operating in the Mediterranean. Some of these may be destined for transfer,, at least on paper, to the Egyptian Navy. It is equally possible that Soviet submarines may tempo- rarily base on Albanian territory. 2.
