Approved For Release 2002/05/06 : CIA-RDP62-00631 R000300030011-5 27 March 1959 Dear Chick: We all hope your leg is mended and you are now able to get around again, particularly as you must also be getting some spring weather, Here the bulbs and the cherries and the magnolia are all coming out, and the town is getting very attractive. The main reason for writing is to see if you are interested in a possibility that has now become more firm and if so how we can handle it. On 25 October 1958 1 wrote you and gave a very general presentation in paragraph 2. You wrote back on about 10 November, saying that you might be interested on a trial basis. Action subsided due to a variety of changes but now has been revived with considerable urgency. The beat description I can give you of the Job under the circumstances is as follows: The position is primarily concerned with monitoring the progress of several major research and development (primarily the latter) efforts. Associated requirements are to keep informed of progress being made and to induce progress where it lags; with appropriate assistance, to administer the very large contracts involved in these efforts; to coordinate the evaluation of any proposals in terms of feasibility. timing and financing; to keep abreast of scientific and technical developments in these fields, and of U. S. policy affecting them. so as to be able to recommend further projects. The best unclassified description of what this is all about is probably "advanced hardware. it Approved For Release 2002/05/06 : CIA-RDP62-00631 R000300030011-5 Approved For Release 2002/05/06 : CIA-RDP62-00631 R000300030011-5 The position calls for considerable appreciation of advanced technological matters, if not actual competence in all of them. It will call for frequent travel in the U. S. A primary requirement is the ability to deal persuasively with corporation executives and engineers. STATINTL The problem is that the present incumbent intends to leave very shortly and some overlap is almost essential. ' lw t we need to know, therefore, is whether (a) you can wind up your affairs there on an abrupt basis for early return with the hope that (b) you would be in a position to be on the job by 15 June. If (a) and (b) are possible, then (c) could you arrange to meet th man for you would be working directly about 15 April { in I Iwhere he will be attending a conference. He feel a, rightly, no final commitment should be made until there has been discussion between you for a complete understanding of the situation. The trip to STATINTL seems to make much more sense than bringing you all the way back here for such a meeting. If you can do this and want to, please cable as soon as you can so that we can give you precise dates and places. My personal feeling is that this is a good assignment carrying considerable responsibility, intrinsically interesting, and providing as much work as I think even you will want. } Best to Pam, and we are looking forward to seeing you in the not too distant future in any case.
