C)-ORDINATING COIMITTEE Export of Air/Sea Rescue Equipment for CONFIDENTIAL Poland 54 4248005 Memorandum by the United Kingdom Delegation The United Kingdom authorities have been asked to approve the export of the electronic equipmentdescribed below to Poland. In addition they would welcome the views of other COCOM countries on the possibility of exports to other countries in the Sino-Soviet Bloc. 2. The equipment is designed for air/sea rescue work and consists of a simple beacon operating on the international distress frequency of 243 Mc/S, which can be detected by a search aircraft or ships fitted with the search receiver. The equipment is known as "S.A.R.A.H." It is understood that countries bordering on the Baltic are co-operating in co-ordinating their air/sea rescue services, and their fishing fleets are being equipped with this equipment. Poland is also co-operating in this scheme. Technical details: The Beacon transmitter is covered by I.L. 1517 output: 15 watts approx. power supply: 6 volts direct current power consumption: 1.8 watts operating frequency: 243 Mc/S antenna height: ll2 in (30 cm) The Search receiver is covered by I.L. 1501 (b):2 and I.L. 1501 (b) 4 Sensitivity: better than 12 microvolts power supply: 6 or 12 volts d.c. power consumptions: 30 watts 4. In view of the fact that this equipment is simple and designed for the humanitarian work of life-saving the United Kingdom authorities would welcome an indication from other countries as to whether objections would be raised to the export of this equipment to Poland, in the first instance, and also to other Sino-Soviet bloc countries. 5. This particular submission is at present confined to one "S.A.R.A.H." equipment for Poland. The approximate value is $37000. United Kingdom Delegation, Paris. October 5, 1959.
