An atlas of administrative units of Communist China prepared by the Central
Intelligence Agency to aid researchers working with current problems of that
complex country has been released for sale to the public through the Office of
Technical Services, Business and Defense Services Administration, U.S. Department
of Commerce.
Twenty-five maps, some in color, appear in the 51-page volume, CHINA:
Provisional Atlas of Communist Administrative Units. They are large -scale
(19 x 232-inch) reproductions of maps appearing originally in The Provisional
Atlas of China, a pocket-size volume published in Communist China in late 1956
for use in schools and offices.
The maps show place names, hsien (county) seats, and some hydrography and
roads. Marginal lists give administrative structure for each of the province-
level units. The maps are current to August 1958.
The volume also contains instructions for use, explanation of the adminis-
trative structure of Red China, a key to the new 'Pinyin" system of romanization,
and an index of administrative names by first and second syllable.
The atlas, PB 161275 CHINA: Provisional Atlas of Communist Administrative Units,
prepared by Central Intelligence Agency, 1959, may be ordered from OTS, U.S. Depart-
ment of Commerce, Washington 25. It contains 51 pages, price $5.
