Procurement for the five-year period 1955-1959, totaled 286,7112 map sheets
and 51,639 publications. During the period map procurement iuc:r eased from
45,8814 sheets to 72,779 sheets, an increase of 581A The procurement of related
publications increased only 21D.
Of the total maps procured, 35;~ were for the Army Nap Service, 31,17 were
for the Department of State, and 21;1 were for the Library of Congress,, The
remaining 1U,. were distributed to the other participating mapping orga i ations?
Purchases accounted for ld6 of the total procurement, exchanges accounted
for 37%, and gifts accounted for 17%,
Procurement from the Soviet Bloc totaled almost 10,000 sheets, or three
times the procurement effected in the previous five-year period, Procurement
was materially improved in all countries except Rumania,

Procurement from Europe, excluding the Bloc countries, was generally
steady and satisfactory.. Two exceptions were Greece and Yugoslavia.
Procurement in the Near East countries fluctuated from year to year,
depending largely on the frequency of visits made by Geographic Attaches.
Procurement was fairly steady in India, Ceylon, Pakistan, Lebanon and Israel
Dr. Held's procurement in Iraq-in 1958 accounted for two-thirds of the total
from the area that year, and one-fourth of the procurement from the area for
the five-year period.
In the Far East over 50% of the procurement was from Japan. Procurement
in Australia, New Zealand, Malaya and the Philippines was fairly steady.
Other countries fluctuated widely with visits of the, Geographic Attache.
Procurement in Africa was dependent on visits by the Geographic Attache.
In British colonial areas and in the Sudan exchanges functioned fairly
satisfactorily. In most other areas, including the Union of South Africa,
procurement lagged, due primarily to the lack of a Geographic Attache.
In the Western Hemisphere procurement was most steady from Canada,
Argentina, Brazil and Peru. Procurement from other areas fluctuated greatly
from year to year..
