SUBJECT Inspector General's Survey of the Immediate Office
of the Deputy Director for Intelligence
1. Attached is our survey of the immediate Office of the
Deputy Director for Intelligence. This report has been read by and dis-
cussed with the DD/I, and his comments will be forwarded to you shortly.
2. You will note that this report contains only nine recom-
mendations. This is a reflection of the fact that the DD/I's immediate
office is well organized and smoothly operating. The DD/I should be
especially praised for the fact that he has kept the size of his immediate
staff down and runs his office with a small number of personnel who
work well as staff assistants. Further, while one could offer several
variants to the organization of the DD/I area--the seven offices (ONE,
25X1A8a OCR, OCI, OSI, ORR, OBI and.--we believe that these should be made
only with some major objectives in view, such as a reduction in personnel.
Consequently we have, proposed no changes, with one slight exception.
In the present organization of the Agency the DD/I structure works satis-
factorily, and the DD/I exercises his command responsibilities in
accordance with good management practices.
3. I owe an apology to the DD/I for the length of time that
this survey has taken. This was a result of my personally taking an active

part in the study and being distracted by more urgent tasks and also by
the necessity for re-doing part of the inspection. We regret that this
may have inconvenienced the DD/I and his staff, but appreciate their con-
tinued courtesy and cooperation.
