TOP SECRET
MEMORANDUM FOR: Mr. Dulles 23 May 1957
Herewith are four papers, two of them requiring your signature which I
felt you should see on 24 May. They are as follows:
1. A mission plot and summary of our latest Middle East mission
which was conducted over Syria on 21 May. This is merely for your
information and requires no action.
2. A thermofax copy of the memorandum addressed by
to Messrs. Quarles, Douglas, Herter, Goodpaster and yourself. You
should be aware of the following circumstances concerning this piece of
paper. As soon as Goodpaster received it and glanced at his copy, he con-
cluded that this document delt with matters of so sensitive a nature that
they should be handled orally and should not be written in a memorandum
distributed to four departments of the Government. Accordingly, he
requested that all copies be picked up and destroyed, including the copy
addressed to you. This has been done. I had the attached thermofax
copy made by one of the girls in my office who is cleared for the project
so that you might read it through if you wish. I strongly recommend that
even this copy be destroyed after you have seen it.
3. A memorandum for your signature to the Assistant Deputy Chief
of Staff for Personnel, USAF, requesting an extension of
tour of duty here. I believe this will meet with little resis nce and need
not explain to you how essential I feel his presence here is for at least
another year. The memorandum is worded in such a way (I hope) as not to
raise any issue about the duration of the project. This should go forward
immediately.
4. Concurrence in a contract with Eastman Kodak Company for your
signature. This document is similar to many I have presented to you and
authorizes our Contracting Officer to execute the contract with E
therefore raises no issue of policy for decision.
