25X1 A9a Due Date: 15 January 1960
Analyst :
25X1 A9a The initial work on this project has only recently begun, due
to other essential work on which has been engaged. The
project is getting off to a slightly delayed start, but it is too
25X1 A9a early to estimate whether a new due date will be called for. Mr.
has been collecting information gradually over the past
several months, however, and the progress made during September
will permit a more definite status report in the next monthly report.

In connection with her work on the 1959 Military Expenditures
NIE, has compiled an impressive array of information on
the Soviet requirements for communications equipment, based on OB
and other information relating to end-use patterns. It was felt
that this information would be extremely valuable in published RR
report form if sufficient supporting data on production facilities
could be derived from plant data. It was deceided that the initial
survey of the plant data should be charged to this project until

such time as it was decided to either undertake a new project or
abondon the attempt to make more use of the NIE contribution.
2. Status of Support Pro 1 ect s
a) Project 30.2232, NIS 19, Hungary, Section 64, Manufacturing
and Construction
Branch contributions covering electric battery production and
electric wire and cable were completed and forwarded to I/PE. The
Signal Corps contribution to this NIS was reviewed by the Branch
and a meeting is scheduled with the author and ACSI representatives
to overcome a few discrepancies between the contribution and Branch
information.
V b) Project 30.2662, USAF: Production of Specified Industries
The information sheets were reviewed and forwarded to USAF.
No information has been received which would modify the estimates
given in April. Current research will probably result in a need
for some modification in 1960.
v?" c) Project 30.2201, Soviet Military Expenditures Through 1964
The Branch contribution to this project was completed and for-
warded to I/ME.
d) Project 4.2667, Support to COCOM: 19 9 List Review
The Branch continued to expend a significant amount of time
on this project during August. The fact sheets for those items
for which this Branch is responsible have been completed, but a
few additional new items are being considered. Intelligence state-
ments will be required for these. It is expected that the amount
of work required to support the 1959 List Review will drop off
somewhat during the next few months, but that it will continue to
take several hours per week of the Branch'Chief's time.
3. Changes in Estimates
None.
4. Relationships with other Components
a) Relationships with ORR components in general have steadily de-
teriorated during August as a result of the deathless witticisms
of the male personnel and the more understandable resentment of the
female personnel brought about by the impending relocation of a
