preparation of comprehensive RR's on the iron and steel industries of Bloc
countries it has been observed that little timely information is being
disseminated to the intelligence community regarding significant developments
in these industries. Material in NIS's is twelve or more months old when published
and contains no forecasts, and contributions to the Current Intelligence
Daily or Weekly Review because of space and time limitations, deal only with

specific aspects of current interest. NIE's as published contain little
industrial information other than production estimates.
To meet the apparent need for basic as well as timely information it is
hoped that provision can be made in future ERA programs for the preparation
of annual summary reviews of the status of the industry and of significant
developments up to a recent date, with such forecasts as can then be made.
These could be written in three sections -- European Satellites, USSR, and
Far East, although the scheduling of NIS contributions might prevent simul-
taneous preparation and publication.
