Approved For Release 2006/10/19: CIA-RDP63T00245R000100220126-7 TRANSCRIPT OF BROADCAST By Fulton Lewis, Jr., Station WGMS at 7-7015 P. M. 6 February 1958 I have here tonight some high pressure material being distributed by the Crusade for Freedom in its present some- what lilting National Fund raising drive, including a letter signed by one Carl Roupe, regional director for the campaign in Chicago in answer to a letter of inquiry from a past state commander of the American Legion Auxiliary in Illinois. It's interesting, because its shows the utter disregard for fact and the utter disregard for fact and the utter irresponsibili- ty of the people into whose hands the administration of this fund raising campaign has been given. This says: "I will say for the record that my own check- ing of the fact convinces me that every charge but one made by Fulton Lewis Jr. is either completely false or a malicious distortion of the truth to give a totally false impression." He then cites the incident of the so-called cigarette. black- market incident, leaving everything else in the category of falsification. I have some questions to ask Mr. Roupe: Is it true that the Crusade is disapproved by the National Information Agency? Is it true that it makes no financial, no public financial statement? Is the story of Fletcher Bartholomew true? Is it true that the Free Europe Committee makes no public financial statement and has made no public report since 1955? Is it true that Hubert Ripka and Ferdinand Perutka and Milas Varnek were on the Free Europe payroll? Perutka still there, par- ticipating in the broadcasting to the iron curtain countries. Is it true that they and a lot more were open collaborators with the Communists before the Communists threw them out? Is it true that Perutka and Ripka and Varnek said and wrote the things I quoted them on in my syndicated column and in these broadcasts? Is it true that General Crittenberger has refused to answer any of the questions I put to him for the last two months. Is it true that Mr. Gwilym Price, the head of the Crusade for Freedom, first agreed to let me tell him Approved for Release 2006/iO/19-:CIA-RDP63Tt}424 26=7- Approved For Release 2006/10/19: CIA-RDP63T00245R000100220126-7 what material I have for his own protection, then backed out on the meeting and has never been willing to see or talk to me since? There are plenty more that could be asked but those are enough, and I suggest that Mr. Roupe put up or shut up, and they can be answered yes or no. .
