Approved For Release 2004/10/27: CIA-RDP63T00245R0001 99,0129-4 - " TRANSCRIPT OF BROADCAST By Fulton Lewis, Jr., Station WGMS at 7-7:15 P. M. 4 February 1958 Now I have here an interesting letter from a listener in Houston, Texas. He informs me that he is an owner in Chrysler automobile stock and he wrote in asking, to the Chrysler Company, asking whether Chrysler is contributing anything to the Crusade for Freedom. He received a reply telling him that Chrysler has been contributing $50,000 each year from the Chrysler Fund, but the Chrysler Company did not stop at this point. Subsequent to the receipt of the letter, the gentleman informs me that he received a per- sonal long-distance telephone call from an official of the Chrys- ler Corporation in Detroit, which he describes as follows; and I quote from his letter; "It seems that they have been contributing $50,000 a year, but they say that Ford con- tributes $250,000. They promised to obtain the informa- tion which you have on Crusade for Freedom before contrib- uting further. At least they show some concern. I am a stockholder in Chrysler and I have asked them to assign someone to listen to your newscasts so that they would know what your charges are against Crusade for Freedom." I shall certainly cooperate with the Chrysler Company in every way and shall be delighted to make available to them my files and documentation on the Crusade and the Radio Free Europe, which it supports, because the very purpose of these broadcasts is to force a house-cleaning on the whole Free Europe operation by public exposure and pinching their pocketbook, and there are some indications that campaign is having some effect. There are reports around the White House today, for example, that the president of the Free Europe op- eration, retired Lieutenant General Willis B. Crittenberger, made a hasty trip to Washington today to confer with White House assistant General Jerry Persons, because of a general upheaval of protests and demands for a clean-up within the Free Europe organization itself in New York. I've been try- ing all afternoon to get General Persons on the phone, but he is reported tied up in constant conferences, so I have not been able to reach him. I would like to take this occasion, however, to answer the many hundreds of thousands, if not thousands, not hun- dreds of thousands, (sic) hundreds if not thousands of you Approved For Release 2004/10/27 : CIA-RDP63T00245R000100220129-4 Approved For Release 2004/10/27 : CIA-RDP63T00245R000100220129-4 good listeners who have written in asking that the material in this series of broadcasts be incorporated into a single book or pamphlet. Just as soon as the series is completed, I assure you we will do so. Now as against the interest shown by the Chrysler Corporation, which seems to me very admirable, I have here a letter signed by Mr. Gwilym Price, chairman of the board, of the Westinghouse Corporation, and head of the Crusade for Freedom, who has been touring the country as the guest of honor at luncheons of big cor- poration executives on which the Crusade plans to put the bite. This is an answer to a letter to him from a stock- holder asking whether Westinghouse is contributing anything to the Crusade, and in reply Mr. Gwilym Price writes back as follows: "On the 12th of November last, at a meeting at the White House, the President of the United States and his prin- cipal advisers on foreign affairs assured a group of corpo- rate executives that Radio Free Europe plays a vital, neces- sary, and effective part in the American policy in the struggle against the Soviet, and for the ultimate freedom of the Satel- lite states from Soviet rule. The group was further assured that in the minds of these authorities, it is essential to have the Free Europe committee which operates Radio Free Europe managed by private citizens, with as wide public support both personal and corporate as possible. As the struggle for free- dom is vitally very important to every American and as the people in the government are fully informed and have the re- sponsibility for the methods to be used in this struggle for men's minds, the company was glad to accept their recommen- dation and contribute to the Crusade for Freedom for the sup- port of Radio Free Europe. Sincerely yours, Gwilym A. Price." Please note there is a maximum of flag-waving and fancy phrases, and a minimum of information--nothing at all as to the amount or why anything is given to an outfit that refuses to make a public financial statement and is specifically disapproved by the leading clearinghouse of the nation for fund-raising drives. By way of further pursuing these reports on Radio Free Europe and the Crusade and the affiliated operations, I am working currently on a story which I hope to have in the im- mediate future about a cigarette blackmarket scandal involv- ing some of the top Free Europe officials in Munich, which the leaders both in New York and Munich have tried to cover up unsuccessfully. I hope to have the details for you within a few days. Approved For Release 2004/10/27 : CIA-RDP63T00245R000100220129-4
