Friday - 18 August 1961
Talked with Bill Darden to check on Monday's hearing before
Senate Armed Services. Mr. Darden stated that he had personally
talked with all five members of the CIA Armed Services Subcommittee
and thought they would be in attendance. In addition, he was sure
Senator Hayden planned to be there since he had proposed the meeting
to Senator Russell. Senator Chavez was also being invited and if he
attended this would be full attendance for the members of both Subcom-
mittees of Appropriations and Armed Services since Bridges. Saltonstall
and Russell are on both. The other two members of Armed Services are
Byrd and Stennis (new this year).
Darden stated that a member of the Appropriations Committee
had written a letter to Senator Hayden referring to the newspaper
comments on the forthcoming resignat ion of Mr. Allen Dulles and
suggesting that with other events it might be an appropriate time to
have a review of Agency matters to check on the number a personnel
and the amount of money being spent. Asked for further guidance as
to content and Darden indicated that in addition the Committee would
want to bear about various operational activities. Darden also sug-
gested that we might have an organisation chart and go over very
briefly our organisation and functions. Darden had no further suggestion
to offer.
