purpose of the release. These comments were actually read from a
prepared statement.
5, Senator Russell was concerned that all members understand
those classified areas which should be avoided in any questioning of
Powers or in any statements by Committee members. These areas
were indicated by the Director as including performance of aircraft
specifically altitude, Powers' ability to withhold information from
classified statement. In addition, he did make some co.
Services and the Senate Armed Services at noon today.
4. The Director then proceeded to read his Pre,
appear in public. Jackson did not appear to be fully convinced in
face of the arguments that this would help the matter since eventually
Powers would have to face the press. Further argument was made
that a Committee other than one having legislative oversight would
probably request that Powers appear before it.
3. Senator Russell then indicated that an unclassified

press and in particular the Kenworthy article in the NEW YORK
TIMES of 28 February.
7. Senator Goldwater made a surprise contribution by
indicating that he had actually flown the it-2 stating that it was a
fragile aircraft and in fact anyone in his right mind would not even
fly it because of its delicate structure.
