1. I want to brief for you this morning our latest
National Intelligence Estimates of Soviet mili-
tary capabilities for attack and defense, and
then review our present appreciation of the So-
viet economy.
A. Let me begin by saying that we have a high
degree of confidence in these estimates,
which rest on a base of evidence broader
and more solid. than any we have had before.
1. The evidence comes. from a wide variety
of sources, ranging from the classical
clandestine methods to electronic in-
telligence, the collection of nuclear
test debris, and Other methods I cannot
discuss at this time.
