SUBJECT: Meeting with Mr. William Darden, Senate
Armed Services Committee Staff
1. On this date, I talked with William Darden, Senate
Armed Services Committee staff. I discussed with him the Agency's
interest in constructing a printing plant at the Langley headquarters
site and asked him for his thoughts. I told him we had discussed
the matter with our House Appropriations and House Armed Services
Subcommittees and they had given their approval. Mr. Darden said
he felt this was a matter that should be discussed with the Chairman
and with Senator Stennis. He suggested that this be done at our next
briefing of the combined Senate Armed Services and Appropriations
Subcommittees.
2. I used Mr. Darden's suggestion to raise the question of
the timing of our next briefing. It was agreed that we would be in
touch with him again early next week with a view to our having a
meeting sometime next week or, at the latest, before 10 July when
the Senate recesses for the Republican convention.
3. I brought up the subject of the CIA Retirement bill and
received the clear impression that Mr. Darden is not at all optimistic
regarding the chances for our getting the bill through. He again said
he felt the only way the Agency would get any action on this was on the
basis of a direct personal approach from Mr. McCone to Senator
Rus sell.
