5, Jay Sourwine, Senate Internal Security
Subcommittee staff, asked if it would create any problems for the Agency
if the Subcommittee were to contact who has
made several suicide attempts., the most recent being an attempt to throw
himself in the path of a subway train. I told S.ourwine I would look into
this and be in touch with him.
7. Met with Mr. John Martin, Assistant
Chief Counsel, House Ways and Means Committee, who advised that the
Committee did not establish a schedule in today's meeting. The Committee
will meet again on Thursday on Tariff Classification.
8. Jay Sourwine, Senate Internal Security Sub-
committee, telephoned saying the Subcommittee had prepared a new
subpoena naming the date of 13 April and a letter to Sourwine
indicated this date was more or less pro forma and could be adjusted to
suit the situation. Sourwine inquired if we could make arrangements to
deliver it and whether we would need a formal request to do so. I
indicated we would deliver it and no formal request was required.
9. Talked with Robert Michaels, House
Appropriations Committee staff, asking him to inform Representatives
Mahon and Ford that in connection with the Executive Pay bill which is to be
debated on the House floor tomorrow, an amendment will be offered raising
the Director from Level III to Level II and inserting the Deputy Director
in Level III. I indicated I thought it was the appropriate thing to inform
Mahon and Ford in the event any discussion develops about the Agency
concerning this item. Mr. Michaels said he would be glad to inform them.

I informed Meyer that, o course, our policy was "no comment. It I
did refer him to the WASHINGTON POST item of last Monday which
included certain statements attributing it to an authoritative source.
Meyer understood the situation completely and indicated he had enough
to prepare an appropriate letter. I pointed out that, of course, if
Mr. Ford wanted to know more about the case, we would be happy to
brief him in complete detail. Mr. Meyer said he would pass this on.
Steven B. Derounian (R. , N. Y.) who exhibited interest in the Agency
although he is firmly convinced the Administration is pursuing incorrect
policies and the State Department probably has some Communist
influence in it. He took the view that probably in many ways the Agency
is caught in the middle. He offered to be of help in any way he could
and suggested that we get together some time for further discussions.
