Returned to Ben Mandel, Senate Internal Security Subcommittee staff, some of the Scandanavian newspapers he had asked us to check regarding the granting of the Nobel Peace Prize to Linus Pauling together with an FDD summary of the substance of these articles. Mandel has asked if we would translate two of these items. We will be in touch with FDD on: this. 3. Met with Representative Charles E. Bennett to discuss his letter to the Director of 27 January 1964 and gave him some of the background. Mr. Bennett seemed pleased and no response is necessary. See more detailed Memorandum for the DCI of this date. 4. Met briefly with Senator Leverett Saltonstall who had a few queries concerning the South Vietnam situation. I was able to respond to his questions without getting into great detail. 5. Talked with Dorothy Fosdick, Staff Director of the Jackson Subcommittee, expressing interest in the recent study put out by the Subcommittee. It was indicated that Senator Jackson will be forwarding a copy of the study directly to General Carter. 25X1 6. Left word for Representative Bob Wilson that we had looked thoroughly into the matter which he brought to our attention recently and without naming names left a message that the doctor involved has received full payment and appears to be satisfied at this point and that we were going into the other aspect of this case and would be in further touch. 1i.+^ Approved For Release 2005/01/27 ! 1,.-RDP66B00403R000200210044-7 Approved For Release 2005/01/27 f,,, PA- F66B00403R000200210044-7 Journal - Office of Legislative Counsel Page Z Friday - 31 January 1964 7. Talked with Russ Blandford, House Armed Services Committee staff, who indicated again that it was highly likely that Mr. Vinson might well call on the Director for a briefing next week. Mr. Blandford indicated that at this point it was not entirely clear whether the request would be for a briefing on South Vietnam before the full Committee or the Agency Subcommittee. Mr. Blandford also indicated that there have been recent discussions which have come to the attention of the Chairman concerning the proposal that the Intelligence Chiefs of the three Services be dropped from membership on USIB. Blandford indicated this also might be a topic to be raised by Mr. Vinson but will endeavor to check this in advance of any meeting. cc: Ex Dir/Compt DD/ S Mr. Chretien Item 6 - (Security) 25X1 Approved For Release 2005/01/27 CIA-RDP66B00403R000200210044-7
