Approved For Release 2005/ re-41171117! - Contacts 4 CIA-RDP66B00443fbb0200220005-9 10 Correspondence In 6 Correspondence Out 5 JOURNAL OFFICE OF LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL Friday - 26 June 1964 1. I I Received from the Moss Information Subcommittee copy #2 of the hearings on use of the polygraph of Thursday - 25 June 1964. 2. I Met with Mr. John Calkins, in the office of Representative Howard W. Robison, regarding the trans- mittal slip query relating to the Agency scholarship program set forth in the Allen-Scott report. Mr. Calkins was sorry to hear we had no such program, thanked me for coming by and indicated no written response to the correspondence would be necessary. Mr. Calkins will recontact Department of State with regard to the question relating to State's interest that was posed by the same constituent. 3. I I Stopped by the office of Representative David N. Henderson and advised that 25X1 whom the Congressman had inquired about in December, was brought on board 8 June as a GS-3 clerk. 4. Met with Mr. John Martin, Assistant Chief Counsel of the House Ways and Means Committee, who advised the earliest the Committee schedule would allow hearings on miscellaneous legislation would be the last week of July. He noted in passing that it would be well if the Agency could recontact Treasury Department before any possible hearing to assure that the Department representatives are in accord with the proposed disability retirement exemption for CIA. In his judgment, any objection on the part of Treasury would defeat any further consideration of the bill in this Committee. Talked with Mrs. Ashby, in the office of Representative Harry R. Sheppard, regarding the Congressman's interest in the Allen-Scott column alleging that the Agency is "financing college educations" for promising students in return for guarantees that they will join the Agency after graduation. I advised Mrs. Ashby that we were quite concerned about this column and, as she could imagine, had numerous inquiries regarding it. I assured her, however, that the article was entirely false. I also advised her, for the Congressman's information, that we are contacting Allen and Scott in an effort to determine the source of this erroneous information. 6. Talked with William Darden concerning the possibilities of our briefing the combined Senate Armed Services and Appropriations Subcommittees. Since Mr. McCone is not available next week, I suggested that we give thought to a meeting during the week of 6 July, It is not certain whether the Senate will be in session that week but we will discuss the matter further next week. 25X1 EO E L.
