1. Received from the office of Senator
Howard W. Cannon (D., Nev.) a copy of the letter received by the Senator
from The letter has been forwarded to the Deputy
Assistant Director of O SA.
2. Met with Mr. Robert Michaels, Staff
Assistant, House Appropriations Committee, and briefed him informally
concerning American protest to the Soviets regarding microphones in the
American Embassy in Moscow.
3. Met with Mr. Frank J. McNamara,
Staff Director, HCUA, and advised him in response to his request for
guidance concerning possible Chinese Communist involvement in the Dorji
assassination that there does not appear to be any evidence to support the
newspaper speculation of Chinese direction.
4. In meeting briefly with Mr. Benny
Kass, Counsel, Moss Information Subcommittee, he provided me with a
copy of the letter of May 13 signed by Harold Brown for DOD concerning
declassification of the Institute of Defense Analysis Study An Assessment
of Lie Detection Capabilities (U)". Mr. Kass also inquired whether we
could advise concerning the three items listed in the bibliography of that
study whether the title of the items are classified. I indicated that as a
matter of courtesy I would attempt to check this matter for the Committee.
5. I I Talked with Russell Blandford
advising him that the eleven o'clock press conference by the State Department
which I had mentioned to him the previous day had been cancelled.

6. Talked with William Darden who
advised that Senator Russell would like to meet with the Director,
suggesting 5:30 p. m. Russell indicated he would like to have the members
of the Subcommittee too and I assured Darden this was appropriate. In
addition, I told Mr. Darden that the scheduled State Department press
conference for eleven o'clock had been cancelled.
Subsequently, the Director met with the Subcommittee at 5:30.
