In general, there were no distortions or accusations about the Agency. The hearings will be continued to give the Armed Services representatives an opportunity to testify. During the hearing, talked with Representative Mendel Rivers who said he thought it would be very important for the DCI to talk with H. Allen Smith, a member of the Rules Committee, after this matter died down. Reading between the lines, it clearly appears the effort is to get a Subcommittee of the Rules Committee to look into the matter in some detail, looking toward pushing the Joint Committee very hard at the beginning of the next Congress when Vinson is out of the picture. Zablocki was quite frank on this privately saying they realized they had no chance of a Joint Committee as long as Vinson opposed it. JOHN . W RNER cc: Ex Dir/Compt DD/S Mr. Chretien Item 6 -Messrs.
