OFFICE OF THE LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL
Tuesday - 25 August 1964
1. Emily Davis in Congressman
Ogden Reid's office telephoned saying she had received a call from
the Congressman from London and would be in touch with him later
in the day. He was concerned with some additional information on the
Vietnam situation. Unclassified information was furnished Miss Davis.
2. Miss Kogut in the office of Congressman
J. Irving Whalley (Pa.) telephoned saying a constituent, one
had made application to the Agency for employment and had
recently received a letter from the Agency saying there was nothing
available for him, had written the Congressman as he was
afraid he may have been turned down for security reasons. After checking
with Personnel, Miss Kogut was informed that had been sent
a letter telling him there was nothing available for him with the Agency
in the particular line in which he was interested.
3. John Newhouse, Senate Foreign
Relations Committee staff, returned my call of yesterday and indicated
that Mr. Lee, Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Congressional
Relations, had been in touch with him about the "Matthias report." I
learned later in talking with Mr. Lee that he had made ten copies of
the report available to the Foreign Relations Committee and to the Foreign
Affairs Committee where senators and representatives could have access
to it. Newhouse asked if I knew how this document got in the hands of
the CHICAGO TRIBUNE. I told him I did not but the matter was being
looked into.
4. Leon Herman, Legislative Reference
Service of the Library of Congress, called requesting a copy of the
"Matthias report." He was referred to Mr. Lee's office at State.
5. Herbert Beaser, in the office of Senator
Ernest Gruenmg, called requesting a copy of the "Matthias report." He
was referred to Mr. Lee's office at State.

8. James Gehrig, in the office of Senator
Stuart Symington, called and asked if we could assist him in obtaining a
copy of the "Matthias report." It was suggested that the quickest and
easiest way for him to have access to a copy would be by his contacting
the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
Mr. Gehrig then asked what information we had on the situation
in Viet Nam referring specifically to the news that Khanh had withdrawn
from the presidency. Unclassified information on this situation was given
him.
