This mission was flown in resnonse to nrinrity reauirement Although the types of fighters reacting to the missions F__ I indicate that they were probably MIG-17s or MIG-19s. Lacking the capability to attain U-2 altitude, their probable task was to await any malfunction which would force a mission air- craft down to a vulnerable altitude. Mission C335C, flown 27 May 1965, covered targets in south China, penetrating the mainland near Canton and exiting in the vicinity of Swatow. The mission was 1,963 nautical miles in length and lasted 4 hours and 42 minutes. The U-2 was over the Chinese Communist mainland for 2 hours and 21 minutes. The first sighting was of two contrails low and to the left of the U-2 while in the vicinity of Canton. The second sighting was over Leiyang, where the pilot reported seeing one contrail to his right and low. The contrail level was approximately 43,000 to 56,000 feet. During both contrail observations the pilot was unable to identify the type of fighter aircraft or to distinguish color or markings. 25X1 D 29AXA 25X1 A preliminary study of the mission photography shows that 63 targets were covered in nearly cloud-free photography, including 11 airfields, 34 military complexes, 2 naval facilities, and 16 industrial complexes. These targets included 45 on the COMOR list; one scheduled COMOR target was not photographed because of cloud cover. Preliminary field interpretation of the photography indicates that the mission covered the following targets: 4 airfields; 17 military installations; 4 naval facilities; 9 urban areas; and 1 electronics facility. In all, 25 COMOR targets were covered. Eight COMOR targets were obscured by clouds or not covered.
