SUBJECT Preliminary Evaluation of Mission 25X1C

1< The results of this mission are based on a prelimi-
nary field analysis.. This mission provided a considerable
amount of important information on 21 airfields, 11 of which
are primary tactical bases. In addition a relatively large
number of ground force and naval installations were also
covered. No new missile sites or installations were dis-
closed.

NPIC has been asked to confirm the field analy-
sis of these MIG-21's but will not be able to da so until
they receive the films in the middle of next weekW
3< Ten other important east China airfields were
covered. In some cases existing order-af-battle was con-
firmed and in others some changes will result< The offi-
cial Air Force order-of-battle for the airfields covered
lists about 360 jet fighters (exclusive cif the 9 MIG-21's
at Wuhu) and 40 IL--2~3 jet bombers. This mission confirmed
about 300 jet fighters and 50 IL-28 jet light bot~iiaer:~ y A1:
one airfield-Tachang in the Shanghai area--4 c7isar,~:~~n~rt~~~lec~
jet fighters were observed on the field. Part of the dif-
ference between the 360 officially accepted and 300 actually
observed may be due to further attrition and transfexsb
4~ A large number of military barracks areas were
covered but no new significant information was disclosed<
5. The main naval bases in the Shanghai. area, in-
cluding the one at Tinghai in the Choushan Islands, were
covered< There was no indication of continuing major
naval construction at the main shipyards i,n the Shanghai
areas In pxevious years these shipyards had produced
