Flight lines were flown as direc- ted with no major deviation. The pilot reported that two fighter contrails approached from the rear while he was over Hainan Island, and passed under and to the right of his course. The fighters appeared to be pacing the air- craft and apparently were not trying to intercept. Weather was favorable at the penetration point and remained so over Hainan Island, but turned to partly cloudy and to cloudy undercast north of Hainan. The pilot then turned to an easterly heading, and near Canton en- countered clear weather that lasted for the remainder of the flight. Preliminary analysis indicates that these are conventional weapons storage facilities in support of infan- try division administrative area located three nautical miles north- west of Shang-Jao at 2829N 11755E. (See figure 8. ) Eleven fighter airfields were observed on. this mission, ten of which were serviceable. Photographs for four of these are included in this report. 1. Chang-Shu Airfield, 2802N 11531E, consists of an 11, 800- by 260-foot northeast-southwest serviceable concrete runway. An ammu- nition storage area was observed 3. 5 nautical miles southeast. Air- craft: 14 Beagle and 25 Fagot/Fresco. (See figure 3. ) 2. Chu-Hsien Airfield, 2858N 11853E. Aircraft: 40 Fagot/Fresco. 3. Hai-Kou Airfield, 2001N 11021E, consists of a 6, 600- by 200- foot east-west serviceable concrete runway. Facilities include a radar site 0. 7 nautical miles eastsoutheast of the runway center con- taining one SCR-270-type radar and one control building. Defenses include two AAA sites observed in cloud-free areas. Aircraft: 8 Beagle, 18 Fagot/Fresco. This is the first identification of IL-28 Beagle) light bomber aircraft at this airfield, (See figure 4. ) 4. Hsiang-Tang Airfield, 2826N 11556E. Aircraft: 35 Fagot/ Fresco, 3 probable Colt and 2 unidentified single-engine aircraft. 5. Hsing Ning Airfield, 2409N 11545E. Aircraft: 34 Fagot/ Fresco. 6. Kuang Chou/Pai-Yun Airfield, 2311N 11316E, consists of a 6, 250- by 200-foot northeast-southwest, probably unserviceable, con- crete runway, with an extension to approximately 10, 400 feet underway on the northeast end. Several pieces of construction equipment and numerous piles of construction materials were observed on the runway. Haze and scattered clouds preclude determining the presence of AAA. Aircraft: None observed. (See figure 6. ) 25X1 25X1 25X1 Approved For ReleeQQ3/ 8 : CIA-RDP 600170028-7 25X1 jj-'' 25X1 0022 7 Approved For ReleaU03/IQIP 6B00664R00 0017 25X1 1 A 25X1 25X1 7. Kuang-Chou/Nan-Hai Airfield, 2305N 11304E, consists of a 7, 500- by 200-foot northnortheast-southsouthwest serviceable runway, with approximately 1, 200-foot overruns at each end. Scattered clouds and haze preclude determining the presence of radar. Aircraft: 26 Fagot/Fresco, 2 Coot, 3 Crate, 2 Cab, 1 Colt, and 2 single-engine piston type. (See figure 5. ) 11. Shui-Kou Airfield, 2303N 11436E. Aircraft: 17 Fagot (one without tail, in maintenance area) and 1 Colt.
