MEMORANDUM FOR REAR ADMIRAL R. H. HILLENKOETTER
DIRECTOR OF CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY
This memorandum is to advise you that orders are being issued
which will require me to terminate my duties as Deputy Director
for Intelligence, Joint Staff, on Wednesday, 5 October 1949, and
assume new duties as Assistant for Programming in the Office of
the Deputy Chief of Staff Operations, USAF, the following day.
I have greatly appreciated the cordial official and personal
relationship that has existed between us, and I am confident that
my successor will enjoy the same fine relationship with you. -
It is expected that Rear Admiral John Philip Womble, Jr., USN
will be assigned to duty in the Joint Staff during the latter part
of October to replace me as Deputy Director for Intelligence.
During the interim, Colonel Wendell G. Johnson, USA, Assistant
Director, Joint Intelligence Group, will be acting Deputy Director
for Intelligence.
