PREFACE This bibliography comprises a listing of selected materials by and about General Walter Bedell Smith. No attempt has been made to list articles or testimony deal- ing solely with General Smith as a wartime military figure or his administrative testimony before Congressional com- mittees as Under Secretary of State. General Smith's career includes military assignments from 1910, when he entered the Indiana National Guard, to February 1946 and from March 1949 to October 1950. He served as Ambassador to the USSR from February 1946 to March 1949; as Director of Central Intelligence from October 1950 to February 1953; and as Under Secretary of State from February 1953 to October 1954. The first section of this bibliography lists various editions and translations of the two books which General Smith wrote. The second section lists forewords, introductions and prefaces written by General Smith for inclusion in books by other authors. The third section is devoted to the General's writ- ings, speeches and interviews appearing in periodicals and Congressional publications, 1947-1961. The fourth section is a checklist of material, appear- ing in periodicals and Congressional publications, relat- ing to General Smith as a public figure since February 1946. Newspaper references have not been included in the fourth section. The final section lists selected obituaries and edi- torials which appeared following the death of General Smith.
