GOVERNMENT ACTIVITIES SUBCOMMITTEE
OF THE
COMMITTEE ON GOVERNMENT OPERATIONS
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE RAYBURN HOUSE OFFICE BUILDING, ROOM 8350-B

WASHINGTON -- Representatives of the National Aeronautics and Space Adminis-
tration, the Atomic Energy Commission and the Commerce Department voiced support
Wednesday for a bill by Southeast Texas Congressman Jack Brooks (D-Texas) that would
save the government an estimated quarter of a billion dollars a year.
The statement of support came in hearings before the House Government Activities
Subcommittee, of which Congressman Brooks is chairman. The Brooks Bill would coordi-
nate government acquisition and use of automatic data processing (ADP) equipment.
Dr. William W. Eaton, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Science and
Technology told the subcommittee, "We recommend favorable consideration of this
legislation, which would aid us in carrying out the President's policies on sound
management in Government of ADP equipment."
The National Bureau of Standards, a part of the Commerce Department, would have
specific responsibilities in researching new types of ADP equipment under the bill.
John P. Abbadessa, Controller of the Atomic Energy Commission, told the subcom-
mittee, "...The AEC is in agreement with the objectives of this bill." He said
experience in the agency had showed that central coordination of the acquisition of
ADP equipment resulted in savings on the prices paid for the computers.
Representing NASA, Edmond C. Buckley, Director of the Office of Tracking and
Data Acquisition, said the agency "believes that legislation is necessary to assist
in carrying out the policies and guidelines for management of ADP in the Federal
government."
The members of the subcommittee are Congressmen William S. Moorhead (D-Pa.),
David S. King (D-Utah), Dante B. Fascell (D-Fla.), Ogden R. Reid (R-N.Y.), and
Edward J. Gurney (R-Fla.).
The subcommittee is part of the House Government Operations Committee, which
